Social media may not be a good idea during a divorce

Many people spend considerable time on social media each day. Some choose to share various details of their life on these platforms. Others just mindlessly scroll through the posts.

While social media is a major part of life for some people, it’s one that should be handled carefully by anyone who’s going through a divorce. There are several points to consider when you’re trying to decide what to do about social media at this stage in your life.

Remember, perception is everything

Even if you think a post is innocent, there’s a chance that it might be perceived as something else. For example, a post of you near a luxury yacht may be perceived as you having hidden assets. But, the truth might be that you liked how you looked in a picture a friend took at a boat show.

Consider everything as permanent

Most people assume that they can just delete a post if they realize it’s not what they meant it to be. The issue with this is that everything online should be considered permanent because people can take screenshots of anything. Because of this, you should assume that your ex will be able to see everything you post.

Ultimately, you have to remember that all social media activities may come into the picture when you’re going through a divorce. If you have questions or concerns about this facet of your life, you should discuss them with someone who understands the intersection between them. Your goal should be protecting yourself so you can end the marriage on the best footing possible.
